Changing Your HVAC Air Filters

All heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems require air filters to keep dust and debris out of the equipment and ensure outputted air is as clean as possible. When your HVAC air filters get clogged, dust and dirt begin to enter the air conditioner, causing several problems, including reduced airflow, difficulty heating and cooling, increased energy bills, and increased exposure to dangerous air pollutants. The more wear and tear, the sooner you are dealing with a costly breakdown, something that can be problematic, particularly in warm summer months.

Issues Caused by Clogged HVAC Air Filters

Not only do clogged filters prevent a building from cooling properly, they also prevent it from heating properly. Since clogged filters restrict the amount of air that can flow through ducts, this can severely reduce energy efficiency and may cause the system to shut down due to temperature build-up, a universal safety feature on all heating units. HVAC air filters help prevent the build-up of dirt in the ducts, and duct cleaning can be expensive.

With the help of Beta Group, you can ensure your HVAC system works to its optimum capacity by replacing HVAC filters on a regular basis. Our Air Filtration division provides a range of HVAC air filters, all of which can be found here.

In addition to helping you select the right size filter for your HVAC system, Beta Group’s experts will also help you choose the right type of filter for your commercial air filtration system. As air filters come in different grades, capable of reducing different levels of air pollutants, we will help you choose the efficiency of filter that matches your requirements.

Benefits of Replacing Air Filters in HVAC Systems

Air filters ensure the correct airflow that your HVAC system needs to operate efficiently. Saturated filters restrict this airflow and can lead to system malfunctions, making them one of the most common sources of HVAC system problems. By regularly replacing your HVAC air filters, you protect yourself against expensive repairs and failures.

Benefits of new air filters include:

  • Reduced stress on your HVAC system. This reduces energy consumption and, in turn, reduces the amount of money you pay every month for heating and cooling.
  • Increased efficiency and effectiveness of your HVAC system. With an old filter in place, your HVAC equipment will not be able to work at its optimum level.
  • Old air filters can cause internal HVAC system components and ductwork to get dirty faster, which can lead to functional problems and the need for expensive cleaning.
  • If your air filter is dirty, it will not be able to capture and hold as many contaminants. The material the filter has already collected could also be dislodged and sent back into the indoor environment.

HVAC air filters keep the air in an office, retail park or showroom clean, improving the overall comfort and health of employees and customers.

How Often Should Air Filters be Changed?

The frequency at which your HVAC air filters need changing depends on a range of factors, including the types of filters you use, how often you run your system, where you are based, and the type of environment in which you work.

In clean and controlled environments such as rural based offices with a less crowded population, Beta Group recommends it is typically best to change filters 3-4 times a year. However, in an overpopulated environment, such as London, this could be increased to 5-6 times a year.

For harsher environments, the frequency of changing filters is exponentially higher. In most cases, the need to replace filters is dictated by maintenance sensors. When sensors indicate that temperature, pressure, and air flow are registering outside of optimal operating parameters, it is a good time to change filters.

In general, you should check the air filters at least once a month as part of your building maintenance programme to see if they are clogged. One simple test to determine if a filter needs replacing is to hold it in front of a light source. If you cannot see light through the filter, it needs changing.
